College Students Report More Stress: Here's How to Cope

According to a UCLA survey released this week, college freshmen are a stressed out bunch. Only 52% of freshman said they had “above average” emotional health, down from 64% in 1985. Translation: You are more stressed out than your parents were when they were in college.
Not a newsflash to you? Of course not. You are Generation WTF and you’re living right in the thick of some tough economic times where the pressure is on for you to succeed, but you aren’t really sure how to get where you want to go.
The New York Times and ABC News covered the story – and experts pointed to a few of the biggest stressors: Unemployment is high so your parents may be out of work or struggling to make ends meet. You are probably working to pay for school or dreading how you’re going to pay back college loans down the line. And then there's the fear about getting a good job out of school...
Both the study and the media reports surrounding it do a public service in shining the light on this pressure you’re feeling, but practically, you want answers and solutions.
A few tips:
• If you’re always scrambling to do assignments at the last minute, create a time journal to figure out where your time goes. Many Generation WTFers who tracked their time for a week were amazed by how much time they spent online, watching TV and other supposedly “fun” stuff that actually made them more stressed out in the end because the work just kept piling up. We’ll have a time journal up on this site soon, but in the meantime, check out Laura Vanderkam’s terrific book 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think to download your own customizable time journal and get tracking! Once you see where your time goes, you can adjust your habits to get your work done more efficiently and leave yourself time for time the kind of fun that makes you happiest.
• Break the procrastination-stress cycle. Often we delay delay delay on papers, homeworks and exam studying until all that procrastination has us knotted up into little balls of stress. Sound like you? If so, take the procrastination self-assessment to see if you are a chronic procrastinator. If you are, Generation WTF is full of ways to break the cycle.
