Pittsburgh Today LIVE: WTF Job Tips

This morning I went on Pittsburgh Today LIVE for an in-depth interview about Generation WTF -- and the challenges 18-25 year olds face in the current job market. Watch the segment here.
Among the topics we discussed was some specific advice for recent grads, including:
1) Calibrate your internal GPS to find your purpose.
Make sure you are headed in the right direction -- with the right road map to success. Maybe your friends are chasing after the trendy jobs. Maybe your parents just want you to earn as much money as possible. But before you charge off in the wrong direction, make sure your internal GPS has the correct map to guide you to personal success. This is classic advice from M. Scott Peck’s The Road Less Traveled that I’ve remixed for Generation WTF to help them figuring out core values and understanding the why behind their choices. Why are you doing what you are doing? Why does it matter? Why is it important?
2) Get honest about what really makes you tick.
Some people love to travel. Others hate it. Some love the spotlight, while others shy away. Spend a bit of time thinking about the day-to-day aspects of a job, and how it will interact with the rest of your life. Is it important that other people think your work is interesting? Before you can say “I want to work for you,” you’ve got to know who the “I” is. Unless you take this step and find a company that’s the right fit for your personality, both you and your employer will feel frustrated down the line.
3) Ace your interview by speaking their language
Yes, you are fabulous, but in an interview, it’s the time to show employers a genuine interest in helping the company’s goals and mission -- not just your own. This is classic Dale Carnegie advice from How to Win Friends and Influence People, retooled for today’s young job seekers. Say things like: “With my energy and interpersonal skills, I will help you live up your mission statement of putting the customer first.”
