"This spring's college graduates are finding that although the nation's jobless rate is still high, the job market is beginning to improve and starting salaries are on the rise," reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review today. Generation WTF's job tips give college grads the competitive advantage they need to succeed.

Emily Kolek, 22, of Brackenridge, who will pick up a degree in corporate communications from Carlow University on Saturday, has no illusions that employers will come running after her. But she believes there's a job out there in marketing, communications or event planning that would be a good fit.

She had three internships. She is networking with those contacts and hitting job fairs, trying to grow her network.

"I think it's tough and you need a lot of confidence. I've kept in touch with people I've met and know from the past, and I've sent out about 10 to 15 resumes," Kolek said, adding that she plans to beef up her job search after graduation.

"That's a healthy approach," said Christine Whelan, author of "Generation WTF: Getting From What the #$%&! to a Wise, Tenacious, and Fearless You," a self-help book for people in their 20s.

Whelan, a sociologist at the University of Pittsburgh, recommends students establish their own strengths and priorities and seek a good fit rather than a specific job title.

"It's important to go to job fairs. Even if they're crowded, it's worth making the effort. ... It is very empowering for students to take these steps and take charge of their job search in their own way," Whelan said.
